New Insights
sometimes gaining clarity is enough all by itself. We have an “aha” moment when we discover how we truly feel about something, or when we are able to take an aerial perspective of our situation. It is the equivalent of being lost in the woods, and then suddenly getting your bearings. We suddenly have the confidence to start moving in a particular direction.
New Actions
Armed with new insights, we can begin to plan and execute new strategies and actions that will provoke new responses from loved ones and people in our community. Rather than just reacting, our actions become more intentional. As we find better ways of coping, the world begins to respond differently to us, and this becomes a self-reinforcing process.
New Emotions
As we begin to act with more intention, we begin to also feel things differently. The goal here may be to have more accurate emotions, and to respond appropriately to things as they are, rather than responding with emotions that belong to the past. Simply learning how to name and experience emotions without having to suppress them can feel like an emancipation.
Acceptance and Responsibility
As we become more aware of ourselves within our environment, we begin to understand that we have a wider range of choice—and greater autonomy—than we ever realized. We go from feeling stuck to gaining agency.
Integration
As we begin to increase our emotional and behavioural health, we can begin to accept disowned parts of ourselves, overcome shame, reveal our true selves to others, and develop greater internal unity.
These are just a few of the many, many avenues of change that can occur through the process of therapy.
